Once, it had actually expired when I wanted to travel. Luckily, my wife&#8217;s license was still valid \u2013 otherwise, we would have had a real problem.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">True to the motto: <strong>If you have it with you, you won&#8217;t need it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Resident Discount<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those who live in the Canary Islands and are registered as residents can benefit from significant discounts. For this, you need a valid <strong>&#8220;Certificado para Viajar&#8221;<\/strong>, issued by the Ayuntamiento (City Council). <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Vehicle Check<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No matter which route you choose: You&#8217;ll quickly cover over <strong>2,500 km<\/strong>. A quick service before departure is highly recommended. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Route &amp; Tolls<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several ways to drive to Southern Spain.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>My Route<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I drove:<br\/>Rhine Valley \u2013 Switzerland (motorway vignette 40 CHF) \u2013 Rh\u00f4ne Valley \u2013 Mediterranean coast to Alicante \u2013 then along the foothills of the Sierra Nevada to Granada, Seville, and Huelva.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/tenerifeessential.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20260123_121527-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tenerifeessential.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20260123_121527-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tenerifeessential.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20260123_121527-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tenerifeessential.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20260123_121527-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tenerifeessential.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20260123_121527-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/tenerifeessential.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20260123_121527-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Alternative Routes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many travelers from Germany choose:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dijon \u2013 Lyon \u2013 Massif Central \u2013 Clermont-Ferrand \u2013 B\u00e9ziers<br\/>(toll-free between Clermont-Ferrand and Montpellier) then along the Mediterranean coast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or the Atlantic route via Bordeaux \u2013 San Sebasti\u00e1n \u2013 Burgos \u2013 Salamanca \u2013 Via de la Plata to Seville and on to Huelva or C\u00e1diz.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Toll Costs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>France: approx.  <strong>10 cents per kilometer<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Swiss motorway vignette <strong>\u20ac45<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Geneva to Spanish border: around <strong>\u20ac75<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spain: Motorways of the <strong>&#8220;Rutas del Estado&#8221;<\/strong> are toll-free<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Refueling: How to Save Money<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fuel prices vary greatly:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Most expensive: Switzerland<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next: Germany<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Slightly cheaper: France<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cheapest: Spain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Motorway service stations are often up to <strong>20% more expensive<\/strong>. I refueled in Germany and then again in France, saving myself a pit stop in Switzerland.<br\/>In France, I briefly exited the motorway and saved around <strong>23 cents per liter<\/strong> in the next town. In Spain, I specifically looked for <strong>Plenoil<\/strong> chain petrol stations (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.plenergy.es\">www.plenergy.es<\/a>). This way, I saved almost <strong>\u20ac100<\/strong> on the road.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Overnight Stays on the Way<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I deliberately stayed in <strong>inexpensive hotels<\/strong> with secure parking.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mostly <strong>Accor Group (Ibis)<\/strong> hotels on the way<br\/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibis.accor.com\">www.ibis.accor.com<\/a><br\/>\u2192 never more than <strong>\u20ac50 per night<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <strong>Palos de la Frontera (Huelva)<\/strong>, about 10 km before the port, I stay for just under <strong>\u20ac40<\/strong> at the<br\/><strong>Hacienda Santa Mar\u00eda<\/strong><br\/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hsantamaria.com\">www.hsantamaria.com<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a closed parking lot that closes at 10 PM and opens at 7 AM (8 AM on weekends).<br\/>Tip: <strong>Book directly<\/strong>, the prices are better than on Booking.com.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ferry to Tenerife<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fred Olsen Express &amp; Bale\u00e0ria<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These jointly serve the <strong>Huelva \u2013 Tenerife<\/strong> route directly and take around <strong>34 hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/tenerifeessential.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Fahre-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tenerifeessential.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Fahre-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tenerifeessential.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Fahre-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/tenerifeessential.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Fahre-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/tenerifeessential.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Fahre-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/tenerifeessential.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Fahre-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Naviera Armas<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sails from <strong>C\u00e1diz to Tenerife<\/strong>, but stops in Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. The crossing takes almost <strong>50 hours<\/strong> \u2013 a second choice for me. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cabin or Seat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I clearly recommend a <strong>cabin (Camarote)<\/strong>. If you don&#8217;t know the number yet, you can simply enter <strong>XXXXXX<\/strong> when booking. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is followed by ticket and passport controls, facial recognition for exit, as well as customs and police checks. VAT refunds are stamped on-site. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>My personal trick:<\/strong> Those who drive onto the ship first are usually the last to drive off. The diverse landscapes, the vastness of Spain, and the decelerated pace of travel were a true experience for me. The crucial point is that they are not residents and must export the vehicle again. Only if the car remains permanently do the Canary Islands&#8217; import and registration rules apply.
