Teide National Park in Tenerife is one of Europe’s most impressive natural landscapes. If you’re short on time but still want to experience the unique volcanic scenery, the circular hike around Roque de García is the perfect choice.

This short, easy hike in Teide National Park takes you past one of the island’s most famous rock formations and offers spectacular panoramic views of Pico del Teide, Pico Viejo and the Cañadas del Teide. Ideal for families, leisure hikers, and anyone looking for a stress-free outing.

Roque de García is one of the landmarks of Teide National Park. The striking rock formation once featured on the 1,000 pesetas banknote and to this day locals affectionately call it “the 1,000 pesetas”.

Let’s go
I park my car at the Parador Nacional or right by the Mirador de la Ruleta. From here, the well-marked trail starts in the direction of Pico Viejo. After just a few minutes, you pass the famous iconic rock.
After about 30 minutes, you reach a fork in the path. I recommend taking the left trail towards Ucanca. The route goes gently downhill, and suddenly an incredible panorama opens up with views of:
- Sombrero
- Altos de Guajara
- Pico Viejo
- Pico del Teide
- La Catedral
- Siete Cañadas
Tour highlight – La Catedral
The section by the “La Catedral” rock formation is especially magical. When the wind whistles through the bizarre rock spires, it sounds like a natural organ concert—an intense moment that makes this short hike unforgettable.

After a short but steep climb, you return to the Mirador de la Ruleta, where the loop closes.
Personal tip
For me, this hike is a must on every visit to Teide National Park. It’s short enough for a spontaneous detour, yet the scenery is so impressive that it feels like a little adventure.
Food recommendations after the hike
After the hike, it’s worth stopping by Vilaflor or La Escalona—both places are known for their Canarian cuisine and relaxed atmosphere.
In Vilaflor
Restaurante Bar Tito

In my opinion, this is where you’ll find one of the best tortilla de patatas in Tenerife—fresh, juicy, and simply perfect.
In La Escalona
Restaurante El Chamo

A place where you arrive as a guest and leave as a friend.

I especially recommend a
Wine tasting on the way – wineries in the south of Tenerife
Between Vilaflor and La Escalona, several wineries invite you to a tasting:
- Bodega 1242

My favorite: organic wines, including an excellent Baboso puro—a true Vino de Autor.
Conclusion
The circular hike around Roque de García is ideal for anyone who wants to experience the heart of Teide National Park in Tenerife in a short amount of time. Combined with a good meal or a wine tasting, this outing becomes a perfect half-day experience.
