🌿 Barranco del Infierno – Probably the Most Famous Hike in Adeje
The Barranco del Infierno (Hell’s Gorge) is one of the most popular hikes in southern Tenerife – and for me, clearly one of the highlights around Adeje.
The well-maintained trail leads through a spectacular gorge with steep rock walls, unique vegetation, and ends at one of Tenerife’s few natural waterfalls.

The starting point is located above Adeje, near Restaurant Otelo.

Since Barranco del Infierno is a protected nature reserve, access is regulated. I highly recommend booking online in advance:

Admission prices:
- Adults and children aged 12 and up: 15 €
- Children under 12: €5
- Canary Islands residents and Adeje locals: reduced rate
Important:
- Helmet required (provided at the entrance)
- Children under 5 are not allowed

- Hiking poles and shoes can be rented for €4 each
🥾 The Hike – Nature, Gorge & Waterfall
I start right at Restaurant Otelo. The trail begins with a gentle ascent and leads in well-laid switchbacks into the impressive gorge.
The first two kilometers climb steadily. After the highest point, it continues gently downward into the heart of the barranco. You cross the mostly dry riverbed several times.
With each step, the rock walls close in. The vegetation changes noticeably: the initially dry landscape transforms into a lush, almost tropical-feeling oasis.
For me, a monument—perhaps it was once a chestnut tree.
After about an hour, I reach the waterfall – a fine stream falls into the depths, the air is cool and moist. The steep walls rise like a gigantic natural cathedral into the sky.
For me, this place is a true power spot. I enjoy the silence, listen to the water, and treat myself to my bocadillo before heading back the same way – there is no alternative route.

After the hike, stopping for a meal in Adeje is a great idea.

Located right at the starting point – with a magnificent view over Adeje toward La Gomera and El Hierro.
House specialty: Adeje-style chicken – many swear by it.
🐟 My Favorite: La Rambla (Calle Grande)
My first choice, however, is La Rambla on Calle Grande, near the Ayuntamiento.
José, the owner, learned to smoke fish in Scandinavia – and you can taste it.
His smoked salmon is absolutely top-notch. I especially love the salad with prawns and smoked salmon, served with a light dill-mustard sauce. For me, it’s a treat every time.

Absolutely yes.
The Barranco del Infierno hike in Adeje is ideal for anyone who:
